10-Year Major Overhead Crane Inspections Completed in Geraldton – 85t Cranes Undergoing Overhaul

Safe Lifting Australia recently completed comprehensive 10-Year Major Inspections on two large overhead cranes in Geraldton, including 85t workshop cranes operating within a heavy industrial environment.

During the inspections, our team identified cracking within both an 85t main hook assembly and a 10t auxiliary hook, along with a number of additional compliance and maintenance concerns requiring rectification and overhaul works.

The cranes are now undergoing further repairs and refurbishment to ensure continued safe operation and compliance with Australian Standards and current industry requirements.

What Is a 10-Year Major Crane Inspection?

A 10-Year Major Inspection is a comprehensive assessment of an overhead crane’s structural, mechanical, and electrical condition, intended to assess the crane’s continued safe use and remaining service life.

Unlike routine annual servicing, a major inspection involves a far more detailed review of critical components, including:

  • Crane structures and welds

  • Hoists and gearboxes

  • Wire ropes and sheaves

  • Hook blocks and hook assemblies

  • Brakes and drive systems

  • Electrical systems and safety circuits

  • Limit switches and overload protection

  • Rail systems and end carriages

  • Previous repairs and modifications

Major inspections are particularly important for cranes operating in mining, manufacturing, marine, fabrication, port, and heavy industrial environments where equipment is subject to high usage and harsh operating conditions.

Australian Standards and Compliance Requirements

10-Year Major Inspections are generally completed in accordance with:

  • AS 2550 – Safe Use of Cranes

  • AS 1418 – Crane Design and Construction

  • AS 3000 – Electrical Wiring Rules

  • OEM manufacturer requirements and recommendations

Depending on crane condition and history, inspections may also involve:

  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

  • Engineering assessment and review

  • Design Working Period (DWP) assessment

  • Remaining life evaluations

  • Load path and structural assessment

Where required, Safe Lifting Australia coordinates engineering review and NDT reporting to support compliance, audits, insurance requirements, and ongoing safe operation.

Common Faults Found During Major Inspections

Many critical issues identified during major inspections are not visible during routine servicing or general operation.

Typical faults identified during 10-year inspections can include:

  • Hook cracking or deformation

  • Structural cracking and fatigue

  • Wire rope wear or corrosion

  • Brake wear and unsafe stopping performance

  • Electrical safety and earthing issues

  • Limit switch failures

  • Obsolete or non-compliant safety systems

  • Incorrect or historic repairs

  • Excessive wheel or rail wear

  • Oil leaks and gearbox deterioration

In this recent Geraldton project, cracking identified within both crane hook assemblies required immediate attention and overhaul planning to maintain safe operation.

Why Major Inspections Matter

Major crane inspections are not simply a compliance exercise — they are critical for identifying hidden safety risks and ensuring the ongoing reliability of valuable lifting assets.

In many cases, early identification of faults can:

  • Prevent major failures and downtime

  • Improve operational reliability

  • Extend crane service life

  • Assist budgeting and maintenance planning

  • Reduce long-term repair costs

  • Improve compliance and audit outcomes

For industrial operations across Geraldton and regional WA, proactive crane inspection and maintenance programs remain essential to maintaining safe and efficient operations.
