Course Topics

1. Rope Types and Construction

  • Understanding 6-strand, 8-strand, and rotation-resistant constructions

  • Wire rope grades and classifications per API 9A

  • Right vs left lay, regular vs lang lay – suitability and application

2. Sheave and Reeving Systems

  • Sheave groove profile, D/d ratios, and wear tolerance

  • Impact of misalignment and system design on rope longevity

3. API-Compliant Inspection Techniques

  • Daily visual inspections: corrosion, kinks, fatigue, deformation

  • Monthly full-length thorough inspection protocols

  • Use of inspection tools, lighting, and systematic procedures

  • Inspection of fabricated terminations: swages, sockets, splices

4. Rope Discard & Replacement Criteria (API RP 9B)

  • 6 & 8-strand ropes:

    • Replace if 6 broken wires in one lay length

    • Or 3 broken wires in one strand

  • Rotation-resistant ropes:

    • Replace if 2 broken wires in 6 rope diameters

    • Or 4 in 30 rope diameters

  • Recognising other discard indicators:

    • Abrasion, corrosion, bird-caging, crushed sections

5. Documentation & Rope Log Management

  • How to maintain a compliant rope log

  • Inspection frequency scheduling

  • Recording key findings and action logs

  • Aligning with HSE and DEMIRS site audit requirements

6. Safety Culture & Replacement Philosophy

  • When in doubt, replace” – the core safety mindset

  • The cost of premature failure vs proactive replacement

  • Examiner’s role in critical lift planning, downtime prevention, and compliance assurance
